Ancient invocation for inviting the Great Spirit....and a song to bring the blessings of Wakantanka, the spotted eagle who circles above as a representation of the great spirit.
I learned this song from Bobby Klein, who is also singing with me. He learned this from the elders who have now gone to the other side. Bobby explained, "Nothing was written...often the words changed but the melody was the same...it feels channeled from another place and I am just the vehicle. Whenever I asked questions about it I just got a look and a nod and nothing else was said. When I sing it I see in my inner vision a great eagle circling above...."
I cannot really print the lyric, as I have no idea of the correct spelling. As is the tradition I just learned it phonetically and tried to embody the spirit within the song.
Bobby Klein, who I met through my flute player and great artist friend John Ragusa, in addition to everything else, performed the wedding ceremony for my son's wedding! Klein is also an incredible photographer.
We actually recorded the Navajo chant in my home studio during a brunch on the day after the wedding. My Mom had coincidentally given John an Indian flute she found in an antique store. So John pretty much channeled the Great Spirit. I loved the last breath that Bobby gave at the end of the song. It seemed the perfect ending for "Prism".
